NEW DELHI: US-based diversified conglomerate General Electric today said it, along with Ensocare, has entered into a public private partnership with Maharashtra government to set up advanced diagnostic facilities in the state.

Under the public private partnership (PPP) model, a consortium that includes the Public Health Department of Maharashtra, Wipro GE Healthcare and Ensocare by Enso Group will set up the diagnostic facilities at 22 government district and women hospitals that are expected to be operational in a year, the company said in a statement.

Commenting on development, GE Vice Chairman John Rice said: "Through progressive public private partnerships, like the one we are announcing today with the Government of Maharashtra, patients are the biggest winners as they'll have access to advanced and affordable healthcare that previously wasn't available to them."

All the 22 diagnostic facilities will provide services at government recommended rates, the company said, adding 'Below Poverty Line' (BPL) card holders will be entitled to receive free diagnostic services under the Rajiv Gandhi Jeevandayee Arogya Yojana (RGJAY) scheme.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said the PPP will also lower the costs for all categories of patients.

"No single agency can transform the entire healthcare system in the country but by working together with partners like GE and Ensocare, we can take a giant leap in advancing health care to people at all levels in society," Chavan added.

GE had signed its first project under the PPP mode with Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Medical College in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh in 2007. Since then it has executed PPP projects spanning four states benefiting nearly 500,000 poor and needy patients, the company said.

Commenting on the tri-party partnership, Ensocare Chairman Vaibhav Maloo said: "Working together with private players like Ensocare and GE Healthcare, governments will be able to modernise these hospitals and elevate the standard of care to the best in the world like NHS, UK."
